On one hand, the progressive entropy in the system can be said to "explode" the Word. As we examine three novels by Carvalho, Nove noites, Mongólia, and O sol se põe em São Paulo, what emerges is that the same process occurs when the undelivered letters of Manoel Perna, the Westerner, and Michiyo fall into the hands of the books' narrators. A singularity as simple as a letter's altered trajectory can result in something new and unexpected at the point of disconnection - such as Braga's crônica. Like the undeliverable letters in Rubem Braga's "O pessoal," rupturing bonds made of words can be as unpredictable as splitting an atom. However, this motif from both Genesis and the New Testament is also mediated by another creation narrative: the Big Bang or Initial Singularity. It forges connections through words between others who are out of place, searching for order in what appears to be chaos. Critics have commented on the power of writing - the biblical Word as creation - in Bernardo Carvalho's work. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The last graduate![]() ![]() ![]() No one has taken responsibility, but the wizard community is on high alert, and a war between enclaves may be brewing. The work as it has come down to us is a compilation of Aristotle’s writing on the subject made in Alexandria in the first century CE, and it proved enormously influential from the Greeks onward, through the medieval and Renaissance periods. Aristotle asks, what is existence? How can things continue to exist yet change, and how can we best understand the world we live in? In Metaphysics, the study falls on ‘being qua being’ - being insofar as it is being the causes and principles of being, the causes and principles of substances. It differs from Physics, which is concerned with the natural world: things which are subject to the laws of nature, things that move and change, are measurable. The whole collection of audiobooks (mega.nz): Īristotle’s Metaphysics was the first major study of the subject of metaphysics - in other words, an inquiry into ‘first philosophy’, or ‘wisdom’. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The secret of bow lane![]() Now Charlotte Bristow has come to Mount Street, where Kat works as the Bywater family's cook, with a bold-faced request: Could Kat join her in looking for a substantial pot of money Joe was reputed to have left behind? Author Dava Sobel translated the correspondence from Italian into English, weaving the letters and other historical accounts into the unique portrait Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith and Love (Walker, 1999). With Maria Celeste, apparently his most gifted child, Galileo carried on a long correspondence, from which 124 of her letters survive. The eldest of Galileo's children was his daughter Virginia, who took the name Suor Maria Celeste in the convent. The two young girls, whether by their illegitimate birth or Galileo's inability to provide a suitable dowry, were deemed unfit for marriage and placed in a convent together for life. Galileo had three children out of wedlock with Marina Gamba-two daughters and a son. The astronomical discoveries made by Galileo Galilei in the 17th century have secured his place in scientific lore, but a lesser known aspect of the Italian astronomer's life is his role as a father. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Sick porochista![]() ![]() From that beginning, fleeing Tehran as a child with her parents, she is on the move. It begins in the narrative present, then leaps back into the past, to the beginning of Khakpour’s life. Like the bacteria at the root of Lyme disease, this memoir spirals through time, rather than moving in a straight line. ![]() She combs through her life for answers, clues, breadcrumbs: Is this when I got sick? Is this? Reading her life in the present, we already know the whodunit of this mystery, but as Khakpour lived it, she did not. Khakpour spends years in and out of hospitals, misdiagnosed, treated for varying ailments that are symptoms of Lyme rather than Lyme itself, routed to psychologists, prescribed drugs that lead her into addiction. And sick people, sick women, especially women of color, are doubted. ![]() Yet the experience of illness lends itself to fiction, to the surreal: it distorts your perception of reality, your trust in your own body. The writer’s truth asserts the truth of personal experience, of life, over the truth of simple facts. Memoir is, among other things, an assertion of truth. Against the projections of doctors, family, and lovers, Khakpour sets down what it is to exist within the space of that encounter, struggling toward the truth of her experience. ![]() To be sick is to slide between dualities that separate body and mind, health and illness, fact and fiction.
